BOARD OF SUPERVISORS.

The Board of Supervisors is composed of the Mayor, the Recorder and the Aldermen. The stated Annual Meetings of the Board are

On the second Monday of July, to prepare a List of the names of 600 persons to serve as Grand Jurors during the ensuing year.

On the second Tuesday of July, (at the City Hall, and at any such other times and places as they shall find necessary,) to examine and ascertain what sums of money are by law imposed on the said City, in that year, for taxes,* &c.

On the third Tuesday of August, (at the City Hall, or at such other places, and at such times as they shall find necessary,) to examine the several Assessment Rolls, &c. They are to cause the Assessment Rolls, when corrected (or fair copies,) to be delivered to the Receiver of Taxes, on or before the last day of October.

Between the third Tuesday of November and the first Tuesday of December, and at such other times and places as they may direct, to examine and audit the books, accounts and vouchers of the Chamberlain of the City.

There was received for taxes from January 1, 1848, to December 31, 1848, the sum of $2,519,691 55.

There was allowed for discount on taxes of 1838, paid before the 1st of January, $14,403 24.

The largest amount received in one day, was on the 14th February, viz: $236,157 26; the smallest amount was $13 26.

The average receipts being nearly $9,000 per day.

The first 15 days in February, nearly $1,000,000 is received, payers delaying until a few days before the per centage is added.
