PREFACE.

This little Manual is intended to be a companion to the SHORT COMMENTARY ON THE PROPER LESSONS APPOINTED FOR THE GREATER HOLY DAYS," which I published last year. I am thankful for the success which seems to have attended that unpretending venture upon an interesting but little studied subject.

The subject of the present Volume (the PROPER PSALMS) is much more widely read, and this SHORT COMMENTARY upon it has been undertaken to supply the expressed want of a handy Text Book.

Although in the Public Worship of the Church the Psalms are sung or said according to the older Version of the Prayer Book, I have, after some doubt and hesitation, adopted for the following reasons, the Text of the Authorized Bible Version as the basis of these Notes.

(i.) The greater accuracy of the Authorized Version.

(ii.) The presence in it of headings, titles, references, and marginal notes, all of which are most useful to the student, but are absent from the Prayer Book translation.

(iii.) The slight acquaintance of ordinary Bible Students with the Authorized Version of the Psalms. The study, therefore, of an unfamiliar Version may tend to throw new light upon the subject in their minds.

The reader should have both Versions of the Psalms before him, and carefully annotate and correct the one by the other. All the notable discrepancies and differences between the two Versions have been pointed out.

It will be observed that, although a multitude of further references have been added among the notes, I have refrained, except occasionally, from giving quotations. Want of space is one reason for this; but a still more important reason is, that the Student may be induced to look them out for himself. It should never be forgotten that a Text Book is meant to be a guide and help, not a cram book. No true head knowledge, still less heart knowledge, of Divine Truths, can be attained without diligent search of the Scriptures themselves. May this little Work prove an incentive to such search and study, to all who use it!

BIDSTON RECTORY,

BIRKENHEAD.
