THE little book which I now present to the public has no pretensions to novelty, no recommendations but what its real utility may confer on it. Every person employed like myself in the classical education of youth, must be sensible how deplorably a book of this nature was wanted, and if I have in any tolerable degree supplied the defect, at least till my own labours shall be superseded by those of persons better qualified, my object is sufficiently attained. So many treatises on Modern Geography are already published, that I considered it unnecessary to give more than a rapid outline of this part of my subject, to enumerate the principal states and kingdoms of the world, the more eminently remarkable places in each, and some of the grandest features of nature or noblest monuments of art. On some occasions I have gone, comparatively speaking, more into detail; in others I have studied conciseness, where perhaps somewhat more might have been expected; my
