O F THE

FRONTISPIECE,

IN

N the middle of the Plate, before a Monument railed to the Atchieve. ments of the prefent Reign, is emblematically reprefented the City of LONDON, with the Cap of Liberty, crowned with Flowers, and holding the Arms peculiar to the Metropolis of the British Empire. The next Figure to the right Hand, is Justice driving Deceit, Envy, Detraction, and Avarice from her Prefence. On the left, in the Foreground, is Plenty, and the Boys, Glake, &c. point out the feveral Subjects of the Arts and Sciences, Geography, Aftronomy, Mathematics, Painting, &c. which will be treated of in this Work. Mercury, the Ships in the Harbour, &c. reprefent the Trade and Commerce of the City of LONDON, whofe Cathedral Church, dedicated to St. Paul, is viewed at a Diftance; and the TEMPLE of FAME, on an Eminence, may be allowed to be defcriptive of that bigh Estimation and Preference which are already bestowed and given to the NEW LONDON MAGAZINE, notwithstanding the mean Attempts of fome Individuals, who are only actuated by envious and felf-interefted Motives. 'The Figure of a Phanix, at the Top of the Print, fupported by two flying Heralds, indicates the imperfect State and bad Execution of the other Magazines, and the univerfal Complaints which have both in Town and Country prevailed against them;—in Confequence of which,' this NEW LONDON MAGAZINE has been undertaken by a SOCIETY O public fpirited GENTLEMEN, on an improved, general, cheap, and very defirable Plan.
