Excerpt from Roman Life in Latin Prose and Verse: Illustrative Readings From Latin Literature

In the preparation of this volume the needs of three classes of students have been kept constantly in mind. Primarily, it is intended for the use of those whose plan of work makes it impossible for them to devote to the study of Latin more than a limited amount of time, yet who are nevertheless desirous of becoming familiar with what is most famous in the literature of the language, and of gaining incidentally some general knowledge of the life and thought of ancient Rome. It is intended also to provide for school and college classes, in the sight-reading of Latin, a wider, more interesting, and more instructive course than is offered by any existing volume designed for rapid reading. Finally, it aims to be a history of Latin letters, giving in concise and practical form an outline of the development of Roman literature from its earliest days, as illustrated in the most characteristic and striking passages that have descended to us. It is, therefore, meant either to be read as supplementary to a regular course in Latin literature, or to be made itself the fundamental work in such a course.

The general plan of the book is to give, in chronological order, and grouped under the author's names, so far as these are known, such selections as will not only show the individuality of the writer and the quality of his literary style, but also reveal something of the life, manners, and opinions of the age in which he wrote.
