1 XXXIII. and XXXVI. In these two papers, of date 1470 and 1477, as also in one connected with the Friars Preachers of Ayr, p. 52, of date 1469, he is styled Vicar-General of the Order. Dr. J. Robertson, in Blackfriars of Glasgow, Introduction, p. 53, says that having been Prior of the convent in that city, he was, about 1469 or 1470, appointed Vicar-General in Scotland by the Provincial of England, and that when in 1487 Scotland was erected into a province of the Order, he became the first Provincial there.

2 XXXVII. A Friar John Smyth, possibly the same, is mentioned as Prior of the Glasgow convent in 1478. Blackfriars of Glasgow, p. 57.

3 XL. John Shank, probably a relative, is mentioned as Prior of the "house" at Ayr, 1500. Friars Preachers of Ayr, Introduction, p. xxix.

4 XLI.-XLV.

5 XXXVII., 2., XLVI. In Gordon's Ecclesiastical Chronicle of Scotland, vol. i. p. 338, it is stated that he was a brother or near relation of Dionysius Constantine or Adamson, town clerk of Perth, 1491-1500.

6 XLVIII. His name appears in many of the later papers.

7 XIV (1), XXVIII. He was afterwards, apparently, appointed Vicar-General of the Order, and died about A. D. 1470. Blackfriars of Glasgow, Introduction, p. 52.

8 XXV., 2, XXXI., 1, 3, XXXIV., XXXV. He is also mentioned as Prior in a paper, of date 4th September 1477, recorded in the Hospital Inventory, but now lost.

9 XXXIII. 1.

3 XXXVII., 2. A native of Aberdeen and Bachelor of Divinity. Having previously governed the convent of Perth, he was appointed to the like office in that of Glasgow, A.D. 1519. This latter office he seems to have held, but not continuously, from 1519-1542. Blackfriars of Glasgow, Introd., p. 61, 62. 4 XLVI.

5 XXXVII., 3, XLVII (1), XLVIII. Appendix, Littilton Papers, No. 2.

1557. Nov. 28. The Account Book (p. 249) mentions Friar George Eviot as sacristan. The Chronicle of Melrose1 speaks of a William de Kilconcath, "Reader of the Friars Preachers of Perth," having about A.D. 1269 been appointed Bishop of Brechin, though Bishop Keith has difficulty in accepting the statement. The Charter of John Lorimer, (XXI) 8th Sept. 1375, mentions Adam de Brechin as then holding the like office in the Perth “house.”

The last Friar whose name occurs in the local records is John Gray. He, in 1577, was called to account by the Kirk-session for having "raised letters" in order "to get his pension, owing to him as one sometime of the Brotherhood of the Blackfriars, paid,” but agreed to abandon the process "in hope of good payment in time coming." It may be hoped that the old man did not have further cause of complaint.

1 Ed. Edinburgh, 1835, p. 217. In the Registrum Episcopatus Brechinensis, preface ix, rector is read instead of lector, and it is stated "he

refused the see owing to the smallness of its revenue."
