Hymn 35. C. M.

ONG have I seem'd to serve thee, Lord,
With unavailing pain:

Fasted, and pray'd, and read thy word,
And heard it preach'd in vain.
2 Oft did I with th' assembly join,
And near thy altar drew;
A form of godliness was mine,
The power I never knew.

3 I rested in the outward law,
Nor knew its deep design;
The length and breadth I never saw,
And height of love divine.

4 To please thee thus at length I see,
Vainly I hop'd and strove;
For what are outward things to thee,
Unless they spring from love!

5 I see the perfect law requires
Truth in the inward parts;

Our full consent, our whole desires,
Our undivided hearts.

6 But I of means have made my boast,
Of means an idol made;
The spirit in the letter lost,

The substance in the shade.

7 Where am I now, or what my hope?
What can my weakness do?
Jesus, to thee my soul looks up:

'Tis thou must make it new..

Hymn 36. C. M.

OD is in this and every place,
But O! how dark and void

To me; 'tis one great wilderness,
This earth without my God.

2 Empty of him who all things fills,
Till he his light impart :

Till he his glorious self reveals,
The veil is on my heart.

3 0 thou who seest and know'st my grief, Thyself unseen, unknown;

Pity iny helpless unbelief,

And break my heart of stone.
4 Regard me with a gracious eye,
The long-sought blessing give:
And bid me, at the point to die,
Behold thy face, and live.

5 A darker soul did never yet
Thy promis'd help implore;
O that I now my Lord might meet,
And never lose him more!

6 Now, Jesus, now the Father's love
Shed in my heart abroad:

The middle wall of sin remove,
And let me into God.

Hymn 37. C. M.

NHOU hidden God, for whom I groan,
Till thou thyself declare :

God inaccessible, unknown,
Regard a sinner's prayer.

2 A sinner welt'ring in his blood,
Unpurg'd and unforgiven;

Far distant from the living God,
As far as hell from heaven.
3 An unregen'rate child of man,
To thee for faith I call;
Pity thy fallen creature's pain,
And raise me from my fall.

4 The darkness which, thro' thee, I feel,
Thou only canst remove;
Thine own eternal power reveal,
The Deity of love.

5 I am in unbelief shut up,

That grace may let me go;
In hope, believing against hope,
I wait the truth to know.

6 Thou wilt in me reveal thy name,
Thou wilt thy light afford;
Bound and oppress'd, yet thine I am,
The pris'ner of the Lord.

7 I would not to thy foe submit:
I hate the tyrant's chain;

Send forth thy pris'ner from the pit,
Nor let me cry in vain.

8 Show me the blood that bought my peace, The cov'nant blood apply!

And all my griefs at once shall cease,
And all my sins shall die.

9 Now, Lord, if thou art power, descend:
The mountain sin remove;

My unbelief and troubles end,
If thou art truth and love!

10 Speak, Jesus, speak into my heart,
What thou for me hast done;
One grain of living faith impart,
And God is all my own.

HOU Man of griefs, remember me,

Twho never canst thyself forget

Thy last mysterious agony,

Thy fainting pangs and bloody sweat. 2 When wrestling in the strength of prayer, Thy spirit sunk beneath its load; Thy feeble flesh abhorr'd to bear The wrath of an Almighty God. 3 Father, if I may call thee so, Regard my fearful heart's desire: Remove this load of guilty wo, Nor let me in my sins expire.

4 I tremble, lest the wrath divine,

Which bruises now my wretched soul, Should bruise this wretched soul of mine, Long as eternal ages roll.

5 To thee my last distress I bring!

The heighten'd fear of death I find; The tyrant brandishing his sting, Appears, and hell is close behind.

6 I deprecate that death alone,

That endless banishment from thee: O save, and give me to thy Son,

Who trembled, wept, and bled for me!

Hymn 39. L. M.

LORD wl break with thee:

ORD Jesus, when, when shall it be,

When will this war of passions cease,
And my free soul enjoy thy peace?
2 Here I repent and sin again;
Now I revive, and now am slain;
Slain with the same unhappy dart,
Which Oh! too often wounds my heart!
3 O Saviour, when, when shall I be
A garden seal'd to all but thee?
No more expos'd, no more undone;
But live and grow to thee alone?

4 Guide thou, O Lord, guide thou my course,
And draw me on with thy sweet force;
Still make me walk, still make me tend,
By thee my way, to thee my end.

Hymn 40. L. M.

GOD to whom in flesh reveal'd,
The helpless all for succour came;
The sick to be reliev'd and heal'd,
And found salvation in thy name.

2 With publicans and harlots I,

In these thy Spirit's gospel days,
To thee, the sinner's friend, draw nigh,
And humbly sue for saving grace.

3 Thou seest me helpless and distress'd,
Feeble, and faint, and blind, and poor';
Weary I come to thee for rest,

And sick of sin implore a cure.
