3 Let cares like a wild deluge come,
Let storms of sorrow fall:
So I but safely reach my home,
My God, my heaven, my all:
4 There I shall bathe my weary soul
In seas of heavenly rest,
And not a wave of trouble roll
Across my peaceful breast.

DIVINE GOODNESS IN REDEMPTION.

Hymn 209. C. M.

BEHOLD the Saviour of mankind

Nail'd to the shameful tree:

How vast the love that him inclin'd
To bleed and die for thee!

2 Hark, how he groans! while nature shakes,
And earth's strong pillars bend!
The temple's veil in sunder breaks,
The solid marbles rend..

3 'Tis done! the precious ransom's paid,
"Receive my soul!" he cries:

See where he bows his sacred head!
He bows his head and dies!

4 But soon he'll break death's envious chain, And in full glory shine;

O Lamb of God! was ever pain,
Was ever love like thine!

Hymn 210. P. M.

LOVE divine! what hast thou done!
The immortal God hath died for me!

The Father's coeternal Son,

Bore all my sins upon the tree:

Th' immortal God for me hath died: My Lord, my Love is crucified. 2 Behold him, all ye that pass by,

The bleeding Prince of life and peace!
Come, see, ye worms, your Maker die,
And say, was ever grief like his?
Come, feel with me his blood applied:
My Lord, my Love is crucified:
3 Is crucified for me and you,

To bring us rebels back to God:
Believe, believe the record true,

Ye all are bought with Jesu's blood;
Pardon for all flows from his side:
My Lord, my Love is crucified.
4 Then let us sit beneath his cross,

And gladly catch the healing stream:
All things for him account but loss,
And give up all our hearts to him;
Of nothing think or speak beside,
My Lord, my Love is crucified.

Hymn 211. L. M.

F him who did salvation bring

1OF him who diedervank and sing;

Arise, ye guilty, he'll forgive;
Arise, ye needy, he'll relieve.

2 Ask but his grace, and lo, 'tis given!
Ask, and he turns your hell to heaven;
Tho' sin and sorrow wound my soul,
Jesús, thy balm will make it whole.

3 To shame our sins he blush'd in blood,
He clos'd his eyes to show us God;

Let all the world fall down and know, 'That none but God such love can show. 4 'Tis thee I love, for thee alone I shed my tears and make my moan! Where'er I am, where'er I move, I meet the object of my love. 5 Insatiate to this spring I fly; I drink, and yet am ever dry; Ah! who against thy charms is proof? Ah! who that loves can love enough?

Hymn 212. P. M.

ALL ye that pass by, to Jesus draw nigh;

To you

die?

is it nothing that Jesus should

Your ransom and peace, your surety he is,
Come, see if there ever was sorrow like his.
For what you have done, his blood must

atone;

[Son; The Father hath punish'd for you his dear The Lord, in the day of his anger, did lay Your sins on the Lamb, and he bore them

away.

3 He answer'd for all, O come at his call, And low at his cross, with astonishment fall. But lift up your eyes, at Jesus's cries, Impassive he suffers, immortal he dies. 4 He dies to atone for sins not his own, Your debt he hath paid, and your work he

hath done:

Ye all may receive the peace he did leave, Who made intercession, "My Father, forgive!"

5 For you and for me he pray'd on the tree; His prayer is accepted, the sinner is free. The sinner am I-who on Jesus rely,

And come for the pardon God cannot deny. 6 My pardon I claim; for a sinner I am, A sinner believing in Jesus's name;

He purchas'd the grace, which now I embrace;

{place! O Father, thou know'st he hath died in my 7 His death is my plea, my Advocate see, And hear the blood speak that hath answer'd for me.

1

Acquitted I was, when he bled on the cross,
And by losing his life he hath carried my

cause.

Hymn 213. L. M.

HE

E dies, the Friend of sinners dies!
Lo! Salem's daughters weep around;
A solemn darkness veils the skies!

A sudden trembling shakes the ground!
Come, saints, and drop a tear or two
For him who groan'd beneath your load:
He shed a thousand drops for you,
A thousand drops of richer blood.
2 Here's love and grief beyond degree,
The Lord of glory dies for man!
But lo! what sudden joys we see:
Jesus the dead revives again!
The rising God forsakes the tomb;
(In vain the tomb forbids his rise)
Cherubic legions guard him home,

And shout him welcome to the skies. 3 Break off your tears, ye saints, and tell, How high your great Deliv'rer reigns.

1

Sing how he spoil'd the hosts of hell, And led the monster death in chains! Say "Live for ever, wondrous King! "Born to redeem and strong to save!" Then ask the monster, "Where's thy sting? "And where's thy vict'ry, boasting grave?” Hymn 214. C. M.

PLUNG'D in a gulf of dark despair,

We wretched sinners lay,

Without one cheering beam of hope,
Or spark of glimm'ring day,

2 With pitying eyes the Prince of grace
Beheld our helpless grief:

He saw, and (O amazing love!)
He ran to our relief.

3 Down from the shining seats above
With joyful haste he fled;
Enter'd the grave in mortal flesh,
And dwelt among the dead.

4 O! for this love let rocks and hills
Their lasting silence break,
And all harmonious human tongues
The Saviour's praises speak.

5 Angels, assist our mighty joys,
Strike all your harps of gold:

1

But when you raise your highest notes,
His love can ne'er be told.

Hymn 215.

P. M.

GOD of all grace, thy goodness we praise;

Thy Son thou hast given to die in our place! With joy we approve the design of thy love; "Tis a wonder on earth, and a wonder above.
