28. At Blackheath, aged about 50, Tho. Bowles, efq. for niany years a confiderable ftationer in Newgate-ftr. He was one of the gentlemen nominated in 1787, as a proper perfon to ferve the office of fheriff of London; and paid the ufual fine to be excufed. To ftrong natural abilities, a lively imagination, found judgement, and a muft extenfive memory, aided by a claffical education, he had added more reading than might be fuppofed compatible with an extenfive bufinefs (conducted with uncommon application and the nicest integrity), which rendered him a most entertaining and pleaf. ing companion;-learned without pedantry, and inftructive without affectation. His lofs is fincerely lamented by all who had the happinefs of his acquaintance; but it will be more particularly felt in the circle of his private friends, to whom he was liberal without oftentation, and difpenfed his favours from the purest of all motives, that of doing difinterested and effential good.

a Solftitial chafers (melolontha folftitialis) abound; in their grub-ftate they have destroyed much turf. Rooks fhould have great merit with the farmer, as they prevent thefe pernicious infects becoming numerous. Wheat much beaten down in fome places.- Cherries and wood-ftrawberries very fine; rafps and whi e corinths ripe.-d Firft broods of fwallows come out. Bloom of lime-trees hang in beautiful taffels, and are highly fragrant.-/ Tremell. noftoc in great abundance. Young red-breafts (motacilla rubecula), afecond brood. -Some young partridges begin to fly. Rooks retire in vaft flocks to the deep woods
