Asia, o'er thee shall history glance the eye
For sculptor'd glories, symmetry, and grace;
Time's matchless finger shall that glance defy,
The touch of ages, every tint efface.

Where mighty Babel once on Shinar's plains
Tower'd o'er the nations with an eagle's power;
The weeping willow desolate remains,

The prowling jackall haunts the midnight hour.

How is the continent of Asia situated? Between 27 degrees of east and 170 of west longitude, and it extends nearly from the equator to latitude 77° north. At the equator its longest day is twelve hours, and in the most northern latitudes more than three months.

How is Asia bounded? By the Arctic Icy Ocean on the north, the Indian Ocean on the south, the Pacific Ocean on the east, and by Europe, the Black Sea, Mediterranean, and Red Sea, on the west.

How did Asia first obtain pre-eminence among the nations? This quarter of the globe was the first peopled; it was also the original seat of government and laws. From Asia the Scriptures were promulgated to mankind. Here the arts and sciences arose, and with them the splendid monarchies of Assyria and Persia ; but, after the destruction of these empires, the Asiatics fell into a state of supine indolence, which still prevails among them.

What new religion has appeared in Asia, since the introduction of Christianity? Mahometanism; which commenced in the sixth century, and has since prevailed

D

among the Arabians and other eastern nations: its founder, Mahomet, spread the terror of his arms, and the fanatical enthusiasm of his opinions, throughout the western part of Asia.

How is Asia now subdivided? Into Siberia or Russian Tahtary, including Kamtchatka, with several Turkish and Persian provinces, all included in the Russian Empire; the Chinese Empire, which includes China, Tibet, Eastern and Chinese Tahtary, with Leaotong, Corea, and several small provinces; the empire of Japan, consisting of several large islands on the east.

In the south, Ava and Pegue, with several dependent states, constitute the Birman Empire; eastward of these are the united kingdoms of Cochin-china and Tonquin, and, westward, the regions of Hindoostan.

Toward the west are Tahtaria, or Independent Tahtary; the kingdom of Cabul, with the countries of the Afghans and Belooges, or Afghanistan and Beloochistan; the kingdom of Persia; and, the Asiatic provinces of the Turkish empire. The khans, or chiefs, of Independent Tahtary are, generally, in alliance with Russia.

The Sunda Isles, which comprehend the great islands named Borneo, Sumatra, and Java, are generally included in the description of Asia: they form the western division of the Oriental or Indian Archipelago, the greater part of which is now included under the name of Polynesia. To the north-east of Borneo are the Philippine Islands, claimed by Spain; and to the north of the Philippines is Formosa, belonging to China.

What are the personal characteristics of the Asiatics? In the south of Asia the natives have elegant shapes, Roman noses, long black hair, and pale olive com

plexions the Tahtars, Chinese, and Japanese, have broad, coarse features, short and flat noses, the eyes very small and much sunk in the head, with a space of some inches between them, olive complexions, black hair, and large straggling teeth.
