Long did the flage [confels thy fov'reign, Behold! the Major's tears proclaim his

And many a wight, by rude cross-buttock thrown,

With loins unftrung, confefs'd the fod thy

But Wrotham's multitudes could shortly K

tell,

How mighty Johnson, though he fought fo well,

That bruifer ne'er before could overthrow him,

Lay proftrate, and for mercy afk'd, By blood and bruifes fo difguis'd and mafk'd,

His mother could not know nim ! Mourn, all ye old ones! brother bruisers mourn!

Ye knowing kiddies, hover round his urn! Mourn the loft Ben, whofe arm no longer bids

Thofe downifh means to thrive, by which you nap'd the quids.

Mourn, now, each Tinman, Duftman, Raggamuffin,

Each Coachman, Publican, each Jew and Ruffian,

Mark! how the Duke affumes a milkfop mien,

And cuts of Ward, and clafps a playhouse Queen!

See, how B-d-11 quits London Lazzaroni,

And fhines at Naples-quite a Macaroni Watches each note from Billington afcending,

And dies upon a cadence never ending! Perifh fuch melodies! fince loft's the mood,

Which prefs'd the hand of Ben, in Johnfon's blood embrued.

EEL up lies France! long may fhe keep that pofture;

Her knav'ry, folly, on the rocks have tofs'd her;

Behold the thoufands that furround the. wreck ;

Her cables parted, rudder gone-
Split all her fails, her main-mast down—
Choak'd all her pumps,broke in her decks,
Sport for the winds, the billows o'er her

Now am I glad of it with all my foul.
France lifts the busy sword of blood no

Remember, Englishmen, Old Cato's cry, And keep that patriot model in your eye. His conftant cry, "Delenda eft Carthago." France is our Carthage, that fwoin foe to truth,

Whofe perfidy deserves th'eternal chain! And now fhe's down, our * British Bucks, forfooth,

Would lift the stabbing ftrumpet up again. Love I the French! by heav'ns 'tis no fuch

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS TO CORRESPONDENTS.

T is with no fmall fatisfaction we receive another Letter from our valuable Correfpondent ACASTUS, with a promife of a continuance of his friendly Affiftance. The unforeseen Event which gave rife to his long Silence, is equally regretted by ourselves, as we doubt not it has been by our numerous Readers: and we have the pleature of gratifying them with his further Obfervations on Fox HUNTING, in our prefent Number.

We have alfo inferted the Letter of a SPORTSMAN on the Inhu manity of certain perfons to the HORSE. We have too much regard for that Noble Animal, not to be pleafed with many of his Remarks; and we truft they will be confidered by the generality of our Readers, as having a tendency to procure him a better Treatment in future.

If NAUTICUs had for a moment reflected on the Nature of our Publication, it would never have entered into his mind, that An Account of the Victory obtained by LORD HOWE over the French Fleet was a Subject for the SPORTING MAGAZINE. However (notwithfanding we inform him that his MSS. is in the Hands of our Publither, and will be delivered to his order), we thank him for the Opportunity it gives us to exprefs our Joy in common with the reft of our Countrymen, on the Glorious Occafion, and to fignify our Wishes that it may be only a prelude to future Succeffes.

A Contribution to the Hiftory of Card Play, fhall appear very foon.

The FLASH SONG, which an Anonymous Correfpondent has thought proper to fend us, cannot have a place in the Sporting Magazine. Admitting it was new, which is certainly not the cafe, its Infertion would be deemed an Infult to the refpe&table Purchasers of our Publication.

A NORFOLK FARMER on the Deftruction of Game, is received, and fhall appear in our next.

As fhall a variety of Productions, which equally claim our Attention; and which, for want of room, we have been under the neceffity of keeping back.
