Excerpt from Materials for Translating English Into French: With Grammatical Notes and a Vocabulary

Dr. Otto being affected with illness, I was entrusted by the publisher with the continuation of this new edition that was already in the press, and five sheets of which were printed. The author had introduced no change in the choice of the pieces, but showed a tendency of ih creasing the number of notes at the bottom of the pages, in order to make the translation into French easier. I had to follow up this track and did my best to that purpose for the remaining part of the work.

A complete change took place in the Vocabulary, which hitherto extended only, to the first 65 pieces and referred separately to each of them. This was suppressed and in its stead I set up an alphabetical Vocabulary of all the words not comprised in the notes; by which means, the student being dispensed with the necessity of having a dictionary at hand, the use of the book was made more practical.

I hope my endeavours will meet with the approval of the public.
