A GENERAL THANKSGIVING.

LMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies, we, Thine unworthy servants, do give Thee most humble and hearty thanks for all Thy goodness and loving-kindness to us, and to all men. We bless Thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for Thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And we beseech Thee, give us that due sense of all Thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we may show forth Thy praise, not only with our lips but in our lives; by giving up ourselves to Thy service, and by walking before Thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with Thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

Here the Minister may use such other prayers or thanksgivings as occasion may require, either written or extempore, or he may give a space for silent prayer.

ALMIG

A PRAYER OF ST. CHRYSOSTOM.

LMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto Thee; and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in Thy Name, Thou wilt grant their requests; fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of Thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of Thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

2 Cor. xiii. 14.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all

[blocks in formation]

After singing should follow the Epistle, Gospel, Psaller and Collect for the day.

THE ORDER FOR

Evening Prayer.

Let the EVENING PRAYER be opened by the Singing of a Hymn or Anthem.

[blocks in formation]

To be made by the whole congregation, with the Minister.

MOST

OST merciful God, who art of purer eyes than to behold iniquity, and hast promised forgiveness to all those who confess and forsake their sins, we come before Thee in an humble sense of our own unworthiness, acknowl edging our manifold transgressions of Thy righteous laws. But, O gracious Father, who desirest not the death of a sinner, look upon us, we beseech Thee, in mercy, and forgive us all our transgressions. Make us deeply sensible of the great evil of them, and work in us an hearty contrition, that we may obtain forgiveness at Thy hands, who art ever ready to receive humble and penitent sinners, for the sake of Thy Son Jesus Christ, our only Saviour and Redeemer. Amen.

Minister.

AL

LMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of Thy great mercy hast promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto Thee; Have mercy upon us; pardon and deliver us from all our sins; confirm and strengthen us in all goodness; and bring us to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE LORD'S PRAYER.

UR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Minister.

LORD, open Thou our lips.

Answer. And our mouth shall show forth Thy praise.

GLOR

Here, all standing up, let the Minister say,

LORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the
Holy Ghost.

Answer. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Minister. Praise ye the Lord.

Answer. The Lord's Name be praised.

Then let there be read a Lesson from the Old Testament, according to the Table, after which an Anthem as follows:

[blocks in formation]

SING unto the Lord a new song; for He hath done marvellous things.

His right hand, and His holy arm, hath gotten Him the victory.

The Lord hath made known His salvation: His righteousness hath He openly shewed in the sight of the heathen. He hath remembered His mercy and His truth toward the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth; make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the Lord, the King.

Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world and they that dwell therein.

Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills be joyful together before the Lord, for He cometh to judge the earth. With righteousness shall He judge the world, and the people with equity.

[blocks in formation]

T is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord; and to sing praises unto Thy Name, O Most High.

To show forth Thy loving kindness in the morning, and Thy faithfulness every night.

Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound.

For Thou, Lord, hast made me glad through Thy work; I will triumph in the works of Thy hand.

I

[blocks in formation]

WILL lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

My help cometh from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved; He that keepeth thee will not slumber.

Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.

The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: He shall preserve thy soul.

The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in ;

From this time forth, and even for evermore.

Go

OD be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause His face to shine upon us.

That Thy way may be known upon earth, Thy saving health among all nations.

Let the people praise Thee, O God; let all the people praise Thee.

O let the nations be glad and sing for joy:

For Thou shall judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth.

Let the people praise Thee, O God; let all the people praise Thee.

Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us.

God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.

Then a Lesson from the New Testament, after which an Anthem as follows:

[blocks in formation]

LESS the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me,

bless His holy Name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits:
