ting down abuses of law and order and of raising the standard of the profession. He has the time, the means he ought to have the inclination.

The lawyer should also at times array himself as a laborer against the laborer.

In connection with the terrible outrages at Spokane, upon which I have animadverted, I want to call your attention to an incident that perhaps is not generally known, for I hope if I cannot adorn a tale, I can at least point a moral. One of the chief actors in the frightful conspiracy against human life and property accompanied some companions, who proposed to blow up a trestle over which the Northern Pacific makes its entrance into Spokane from the west. He was indicted, tried and convicted, and served his sentence for his acts. Shortly after, he made application for admission to the bar. He was something of a leader among the laboring element, was a fairly good talker in the way in which laborer agitators usually harangue. No one ever knew of his earning any money. But for the efforts of a former president of this Association bearing the same name, and of a few members of the bar of Spokane County, I have no doubt that this man would have been admitted to the bar and possibly become a member of this Association. It took considerable pressure to bring about a report adverse to his admission, but it was made, and he was rejected. The laboring men came to his rescue. They said he had as much right to be admitted as anybody else, and not alone saw no harm in what he had done, but many approved his course.

The members of this Association should lead the van in seeing that good men only are admitted to practice, and that our labors be the labors of love and for good government; that a higher degree of professional courtesy and ethics prevail, and that the laboring man be thus made to understand that the laws are made for poor and rich alike.

As citizen, lawyer or laborer we should occasionally read these and kindred decisions touching questions of such vital moment to our personal safety and property, impressing this importance upon others
