The House met pursuant to adjournment, and was called to order

by the Speaker.

Prayer by Rev. Mr. Harrison.

On calling the roll, Mr. Graham was absent on leave, and Messrs. Cady, Chubb, Hand and Leach without leave.

The journal of yesterday was read and corrected.

PETITIONS PRESENTED.

By Mr. Hawley, of James Watkins, for relief. Referred to the committee on claims.

By Mr. Cook, two petitions of citizens of Hillsdale county, for the laying out of a certain state road, and the appropriation of non-resident highway taxes, for its construction. Referred to the committee on roads and bridges.

By Mr. Morse, of Samuel Day, and other citizens of the township of Keene, Ionia county, for the attaching of certain territory to the township of Boston;

Also, of sundry citizens of Kent county, for the organization of a new township; both of which petitions were referred to the committee on the organization of towns and counties:

Also, of Lewis Patterson, of Ionia county, for permission to construct a dam across Flat river, in said county;

Also, of Josiah Russell and Thomas H. Myers, of Montcalm county, to construct a dam across Flat river, in said county, which were referred to the committee on the judiciary.

By Mr. Barbour, of J. Crowell and two hundred and twenty others, asking the sale of the public works. Laid on the table.

By Mr. Rice, of W. M. Sullivan, and thirty-four others of Lenawee county, for the abolition of capital punishment. Referred to the committee on the judiciary.

By Mr. Jones, of H. C. Bunce, and one hundred and ninety-five other inhabitants of Eaton, Calhoun, and Barry counties, for the appropriation of non-resident highway taxes on a certain road. Referred to the committee on roads and bridges.

REPORTS.

Mr. Patterson, from the committee on ways and means, to whom was referred the bill to extend the time for the collection and return

of taxes in the township of Owasso, after carefully examining the facts which led to the introduction of the bill, respectfully recommend its passage.

The report was accepted, the committee discharged, and the bill to extend the time for the collection of taxes in the township of Owasso, was referred to the committee of the whole, and placed on the general order.

Mr. Ames, from the select committee appointed yesterday, to inform the chaplains of their election, reported that they had discharged the duty devolved upon them, and that the chaplains would attend and officiate as requested.

Mr. A. C. Baldwin gave notice that he should, at some future day, ask leave to bring in a bill to amend an act entitled "an act to incorporate the Troy & Rochester Railroad Company," approved March 12, 1844.

Mr. Hand called up from the table the following resolution :

"Resolved, That so much as relates to the sale of the works of Internal Improvement, be referred to the committee on ways and means" On motion of Mr Hand,

The resolution was amended by striking out all after the words "referred to," and inserting, "a select committee of seven."

Mr. Edmunds moved to amend by adding "with instructions to report by bill," which motion was lost, and the resolution was adopted. On motion of Mr. Ames,

The joint resolution of instructions relative to postage was taken from the table, read twice, and,

On motion of Mr. Scott,

Referred to the committee of the whole, and placed on the general order.

The bill to provide for the payment of officers and members of the legislature, and for other purposes, was taken up,'and the question being on filling the blank in the amendment before the word “dollars,” On motion of Mr. Sweeney,

The vote striking out the word "three," before "dollars," was reconsidered by the following vote:

The question then recurring on striking out the word "three,' pending which

Mr. Ames moved to recommit the bill and amendments to the committee of the whole, which motion did not prevail.

Mr. Cole moved the previous question, which motion was sustained, and the main question was ordered by the following vote.

The question then being on striking out the word "three,” in the amendment, was put and lost, by yeas and nays as follows:

The question then being on the amendment offered by Mr. Patterson, it was adopted.

The main question, being upon engrossing the amendments, and ordering the bill to its third reading, it prevailed by the following vote:

Also, of H. M. Dayton and four hundred and fifty-three others, for the same appropriation; which petitions were referred to the committee on internal improvement.
