Persécutions et sauvetages: Juifs et Français sous l'Occupation et sous Vichy

Examines the segregation of the Jews from French society, including the Aryanization policy, the creation of French concentration camps, the roundups and deportations of Jews to the East, and the resistance movement in France. Surveys both French institutions dealing with the "Jewish question" and French-Jewish organizations (e.g. UGIF). Concludes that 80,000 Jews were deported from France and murdered, while about 250,000 survived the war. Focuses on French public opinion which, in great part, opposed antisemitism. The reactions against the persecutions by Resistance journals and the Church authorities in southern France were influential in contributing to the relatively small number of Jews deported from France compared to other countries. Stresses that both rescue activities and public opinion influenced the fate of the Jews in France.
